What Causes Back Pain?

Back pain can be caused by several things—from car accidents to workplace injuries.

Take strains; for example, they often result in back pain. More often than not, it’s due to muscle overuse; awkward movements can also contribute to the problem.

For instance, it’s not uncommon for people to hurt their backs while lifting heavy objects at work.

When to Worry About Back Pain 

Most cases will resolve themselves within a couple of weeks. If that doesn’t happen, there may be an underlying problem.

Consider visiting the doctor if your back pain is accompanied by numbness in the legs, loss of bladder control, unexplained weight loss, or fever. Onset followed by trauma (e.g., a blow to the back, a fall) also warrants immediate medical attention. 

Diagnosing Back Pain 

At the doctor’s office, they’ll perform a physical exam to diagnose your back pain. For example, they might test your ability to stand or walk.

In some cases, they might order a test such as an X-ray, which will allow them to see the alignment of your spine. They might also recommend an MRI scan—it’ll let them assess your muscles, disks, and ligaments.

Treating Back Pain at Home 

Fortunately, most cases are mild and will heal within two weeks. If necessary, you can always take over-the-counter medications for pain.

Take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), for example—they’re great for relieving pain and inflammation. Just make sure that you’re not taking more than the recommended dose.

In addition to that, there are topical ointments that you can use as well. One of the great things about these products is that they’re much less likely to cause side effects.

Applying ice can also help. Not only will it help with the inflammation, but it’ll also relieve any discomfort. Once the inflammation has subsided, you can switch to using a warm compress.
